Rainbow Springs State Park

Today we finally got out for a day trip. Once you are in The Villages, it is easy to forget there is a whole other world out there because you have everything you need right here. There is so much in this area that is unique and beautiful so I'm glad we remembered it for today at least. Rich and Donna graciously babysat Ava, so after dropping her off we headed to Dunnellon to visit Rainbow Springs State Park.

The first thing we noticed was the fact that the place was packed. The second was the reality that almost every person except us was wearing a swimming suit, which meant the springs were a great place to swim. Neither of those things especially surprised us. What did surprise us was how gorgeous the place was. We love most Florida parks, but this one was especially pretty in terms of the water. The water was crystal clear and fairly warm temperature wise. And it was breathtakingly beautiful.

Rainbow Springs is the fourth largest spring in Florida. The springs and park used to be a privately owned attraction. Based on how popular it seemed to be today, I am guessing it did well for many years. Before the magical mouse took up residence in Florida, I am guessing places like this did very well. It was nice to see families enjoying it and soaking up the fun still today. I am happy to say, we did not see one child using an electronic device the entire time we were here which says a lot for the place!

Since we did not bring our swimsuits, we headed off to see what the nature trails were like. We were very pleased with what we found there also.

Even with it being very hot and humid, we really enjoyed our nature walk. It was very relaxing and peaceful. There used to be a little zoo here but that is no longer in operation. There was a nice butterfly garden that was full of beautiful butterflies. We watched two that seemed to be doing synchronized flying together. And beyond a group of kids throwing rocks down at the waterfall we were looking at and almost hitting us, the crowds were not overwhelming in the least. We gave this place two thumbs up for sure.

So glad we did venture out today and see one of Florida's natural gifts. Living the life in HOT and HUMID Florida!

Another Fun Night with Rich and Donna

It has been so great to have friends here at The Villages. It has given me someone to do things with during the day while Nathan works and it has also given us a fun couple to do things together with when Nathan is not working.

Tonight is a great example of that. First we went out to eat at Olive Garden tonight, enjoying their 2 for $25 special. Afterwards Rich and Donna invited us to their place this time, and Donna spoiled us with pumpkin cheesecake for desert. It was delicious!

I think we might have found a game that Rich enjoys, or at least tolerates for the rest of our sake. Nathan is hoping we will move to Rook shortly because that is his favorite card game. In the meantime, I am enjoying a game that I sometimes have a shot at winning.

Why Being a Picture Freak Can Be a Good Thing

It drives my family nuts that I'm a picture freak. If I had a dime for every time one of my kids said, Mom...enough with the pictures, I'd be (a little) rich. It really isn't so fun that I have a camera stuck in their faces many times when they'd like to just enjoy the moment.

But every once in awhile it is a good thing that I'm a picture freak. For instance, I have been known to be so engrossed in grabbing a great shot that I don't react like I normally would. That can be a great thing. Like when this guyslitheredright in front of me.

I was so excited that he was right there, so close that I could get a great shot...that I forgot to be scared that a creepy crawler was practically within reach of me. Instead I was screeching, oh my goodness...I can't believe I had the camera out for this!!!!

In the back of my mind I had the thought...I bet I freak out over this later. But I didn't. Even now, when seeing the pictures I am just thrilled I got the shot.

So see kids, I'd be even more neurotic if I didn't take pictures all the time! There is definitely a bright side to this obsession of mine!

I'm going to Jackson

Sandra and I took this last weekend to visit the most beautiful and soul nourishing Jackson Cafe & Gallery in Melbourne. That's all we did. We went to Melbourne and went to a cafe.

Some of you know my amazing brother Peter O'Brien. Artist, thinker, writer, adventurer.

He has opened the Jackson Cafe & Gallery at 412 Rathdown Street Nth. Carlton.

The opening exhibition is by Peter, himself. Seven rooms of subversion, dreams and poetry.

A science researcher from the nearby University of Melbourne keeps the conversation elevated.

"Ethical Pickles" are stacked for sale on the table. I know some people would fly further than Melbourne to get a jar of these fiery Eggplant Pickles.

At the heart of the cafe is the organic, fair trade Segafredo coffee.

Annie and Peter

So much stainless in the kitchen.

Sandra

I drank four cups of coffee in a day. A personal best. Nothing bad happened. Good to know.

The music: you'll hear up to the minute local Melbourne funk and jazz musicians who drop in for coffee and check on their CD sales. Next minute you'll be drifting away through the years with the poetry of Bob Dylan and Cohen.

We stayed at Peter and Annie's place in carlton Nth.

But we did go outside. Sandra has just turned 55 and is looking fabulous, so I took a moment off from drinking coffee to capture her urban style.

Back to the warmth and the papers.

Two days of art, science and coffee. Time to go.

Sandra booked a Getz for us. Avis gave us a Holden Supercar, racing pack and all.

Climbers, you know I drive like a pensioner but pulling out into Lygon Street, across the tram tracks, in the high competition evening traffic, on a mission to the airport, we put it to use.

Peter revives the form, poetry and hand drawing.

Our dear old friend Kevin. He is dedicated to crafts of ancient cultures. Vikings, Celts.

Life long friend Janet wears a celtic knot in copper, by Kevin.

Sandra prepares the Red Phoenix Emporium capsule collection as passersby look in.

Interesting small rooms upstairs boldly exhibit art.

The schoolroom, for meetings

No wifi. So why don't you just tell me what you had for lunch?

Fall deeply into the art that surrounds you.

Oil and oil paint on canvas.

Annie. Annie's coral bicycle.

The rooms are beautiful and surprising, a hidden staircase, an unexpected light well.

Home made vegetable soup with turkish bread, coffee, fire.

The Red Phoenix Emporium capsule collection.

Peter can justifiably look satisfied. He has achieved a beautiful, intelligent atmosphere that I know will be loved by artists, coffee seekers and conversationalists. Thank you Peter.
